One of Hollywood’s most memorable dresses is on the market.
Up for auction, with the current first bid sitting at $10,000 (£7,8484.50) – though, it’s expected to fetch between $200,000 (£156,979) and $300,000 (£235,468.50) – is the pink couture Givenchy dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
The legendary film, in which Hepburn’s costumes ooze elegance, is a cinematic classic, which is why this dress is projected to fetch a high price.
Julien’s Auctions is selling it as part of their Legends: Hollywood & Royalty auction.
The gown has a fitted bodice, a scoop neckline, princess seams, and a tulip-skirt.
Diet Prada wrote: ‘It’s been up for auction before, selling at Christie’s back in 2007 for $192,000, but in the years since, costumes have hit historic auction prices.
‘The white and black Cecil Beaton dress Hepburn wore in My Fair Lady sold for $4.4 million in 2017, likely the second most expensive costume ever auctioned.
‘The first is Marilyn Monroe’s white halter dress from The Seven Year Itch ($4.5 million in 2011) and while not a costume, the dress she wore to sing Happy Birthday to JFK became the most expensive dress ever sold when it went for $4.8 million in 2016.’
However, there have been some visible modifications to the Givenchy gown.
It’s a bright pink in the flick. It’s now faded and seems a much lighter colour. Furthermore, it has been noted that the decorations are deteriorated or possibly gone.
Even on the auction site, the garment is described as ‘vibrant-flamingo-pink,’ yet it no longer appears to be such.
It suggests ‘reckless’ wear from the current owner – and Diet Prada concluded: ‘We hope the next owner isn’t reckless when they rock this Givenchy dress… in fact, please nobody rock it at all!’
A couple quipped in the comments section of their post, ‘Kim k gonna wear it next year,’ after Kim Kardashian got criticism for wearing a garment intended for Marilyn Munroe and ruining it.
It remains to be known who will win the bidding battle.
