Taylor Swift is first star since David Bowie to get two number one albums in one year as Evermore tops chart

Taylor Swift’s new album Evermore has scored a UK number one – her second album to do so this year – meaning the singer has matched a feat last achieved by David Bowie.

The surprise album debuting in the top spot means Taylor is the first star since Bowie to achieve this milestone of two number one records in the same year.

David achieved the feat in 2016 as Blackstar and Best Of Bowie both went to number one, following his death on January 10.

Evermore follows on from Folklore, which also topped to Official Albums Chart, meaning Taylor also set the record among female artists with six number one albums in eight years.

Only three other female artists have six or more chart-topping albums in Official Chart history, with Madonna racking up 12,  Kylie Minogue having eight and and Barbra Streisand having six.

Taylor’s also the fastest female star to have achieved six number ones as it took Madonna 11 years to reach that milestone.

Taylor’s Folklore had spent three weeks at the number one spot in August, while Evermore has been the most downloaded and streamed album of the week.

The race is also on for the 2020 Christmas number one single, with sales and streams over the next seven days determining who will top the most important chart of the year.

Among the contenders are Mariah Carey’s 1994 classic All I Want For Christmas Is You, which has remained at number one for the second week.

The Official Christmas Number one 2020 winner will be revealed exclusively on BBC Radio 1’s The Official Chart on Christmas Day, Friday December, 25 from 2-4pm.
