Sir Ian McKellen has shared a message to his followers after JoJo Siwa came out as gay, wishing her ‘praise and empathy’ for speaking out publicly.

The YouTube star and singer, 17, came out on social media last week, sharing a photo of her wearing a T-shirt which read: ‘Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever.’

She added: ‘My cousin got me a new shirt,’ as she confirmed she is LGBTQ+ after initially sharing a video of her singing along to Lady Gaga’s Born This Way.

Speaking about JoJo’s coming out announcement, Sir Ian, 81, told his followers: ‘I hope

@itsjojosiwa puts aside any negative reaction to her coming-out, at a time when she deserves praise and empathy for taking control of her life in such a public way.’

Fans supported Sir Ian’s sweet message to JoJo, commenting: ‘Us older LGBT+ have to support the younger ones as they come out’.

Others added: ‘Legends supporting legends’ and ‘I applaud standing up for bravery and may this attitude help other people to open up so that they will soon be free and happy with the person they chose … be kind to everyone please…Love’.

Some joked: ‘I just love that Ian McKellen knows who Jojo Siwa is’ and ‘Gandalf just tweeted about jojo siwa’.

JoJo had chosen to confirm that she was gay after fans circulated a video of her singing to Gaga’s track on TikTok, mouthing along to the lyrics: ‘No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgender life, I’m on the right track baby, I was born to survive, no matter black, white or beige, chola or orient made, I’m on the right track baby, I was born to be brave.’

JoJo’s outfit, which consisted of one of her branded jumpers with multi-coloured hearts on the chest, and her signature hair bow being covered in mini rainbows along with the lyrics of acceptance, made many believe that the YouTuber was coming out as part of the LGBTQ+ community.
