Riley Keough has given details about her life with her infant girl, whom she welcomed via surrogacy and named after her renowned grandpa.
The 34-year-old is the granddaughter of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley, as well as Lisa Marie Presley’s daughter, who died in January at the age of 54.
Riley became a mother for the first time in August of last year, and she has now announced that she and husband Ben Smith-Peterson had their baby through surrogacy.
She stated that while she ‘can carry children,’ they felt surrogacy would be ‘the best alternative’ as she dealt with autoimmune difficulties as a result of Lyme illness.
In an interview with Vanity Fair on the cover of the September edition, the actress disclosed her daughter’s name for the first time, telling the publication, ‘This is Tupelo.’
Elvis aficionados will remember the name as the little town in Mississippi where the King of Rock n’ Roll was born.
She said they chose their daughter’s name before the Elvis biopic was released, ‘because it’s not really a well-known word or name in relation to my family, it’s not like Memphis or something.’
But when the movie was released, ‘it was like Tupelo this and Tupelo that.’
They named Tupelo Storm after Riley’s younger brother, Benjamin Storm Keough, who died in 2020 at the age of 27.
Riley also discussed her mother’s death, and the fallout that caused her relationship with her grandma, Priscilla, to deteriorate.
While there ‘was a bit of upheaval’ at the beginning, she said ‘at the end of the day, all [Priscilla] wants is to love and protect Graceland and the Presley family and the legacy.’
The last time she saw her mother was at a party for the Elvis movie following the Golden Globes, shortly before her death.
‘I remember thinking about how beautiful she looked,,’ she said, calling it her ‘strongest memory’ of the night.
Last month, after discovering she had been nominated for an Emmy for Daisy Jones and The Six, the mother-of-one offered a moving homage to her late mother and brother.
Actress Riley shared a photograph of a young Benjamin with their mother to Instagram, and wrote: ‘Missing you both.’
Lisa Marie was laud to rest beside Benjamin at her father’s Graceland mansion in Memphis in January this year.
Priscilla filed court paperwork days after the funeral opposing a 2016 change to Lisa Marie’s living trust that removed Priscilla and a former company manager as trustees and replaced them with Riley and Benjamin.
However, in May, Priscilla and Riley reached an agreement, and Riley was formally recognised as the estate’s sole trustee in July.
