Richard Arnold woke up today very confused after receiving a stream of congratulations for a new job he knew nothing about.

It was announced on Thursday that another Richard Arnold would be stepping up as the new chief executive officer of football club Manchester United, replacing Ed Woodward.

Man U fans were probably more than familiar with exactly which Richard had been promoted as CEO but, for some Good Morning Britain viewers, they assumed the programme’s entertainment reporter had made a career change.

After being mistaken for the businessman Richard, the 52-year-old presenter tweeted: ‘For all of you messaging, I’ll be talking strategy and slashed to the thigh silk shorts @GMB tomorrow at 710 #BreakingNews.’

His former GMB colleague Piers Morgan was highly amused by the mix up, and replied with several cry-laughing emoji, while Susanna Reid retweeted Richard’s response.

TV and radio presenter Will Gowing also quipped: ‘You’ll be marvellous I’m sure, what’s the offside rule again? Will you be wanting a graphic?’

Man U’s Richard, 50, released a brief statement confirming his promotion, and said: ‘I am honoured to have the chance to serve this great club and its fans. I am determined to return that honour in any way I can.’

The club’s co-chairman Joel Glazer added: ‘I would like to thank Ed for his tireless work on behalf of Manchester United during his nine years as executive vice-chairman and 16 years with the club.

‘We are now looking forward to Richard and his leadership team opening a new phase in the club’s evolution, with ambitious plans for investment in Old Trafford, the strengthening of our engagement with fans, and continued drive towards our most important objective – winning on the pitch.’

Richard joined United in August 2007 and has been the club’s managing director since 2013.
