Penn Badgley has spoken extensively about the restrictions he imposed when filming the fourth season of You.
While previous seasons of Netflix’s psychological thriller were filled with bawdy sequences, Penn, 36, claimed that he begged showrunner Sera Gamble to reduce his character Joe’s personal encounters.
Penn ascribed this to wanting to be respectful of his marriage to Domino Kirke, but in a new interview, he said that he’s simply ‘had enough’ of kissing sequences, adding that he shot his first at the age of 15 21 years ago.
‘It’s generated an intriguing discourse,’ the adoring father added. Touching and kissing are two of the few things in life that cannot be replicated; if you’re doing it, you’re doing it.’
He added to i: ‘I’ve been acting professionally for 25 years. I think my first kissing scene was when I was 15. I’m now 36. I’ve had enough. It’s my boundary and I’m
here to set it!’Penn stated on his podcast Podcrushed last month that he preferred to prioritise his family above romantic roles.
‘Like, fidelity, in every relationship, and especially my marriage, is important to me. And it just got to that point where I don’t want to do that,’ he shared.
Nonetheless, he made it clear that reducing Joe’s passion ‘from 100 to zero’ would not be real to the programme.
‘I signed this contract, I signed up for this show, I know what I did. You can’t take this aspect out of the DNA of the concept,’ he added.
Penn went on to say that Sera ‘didn’t even bat an eye’ and was ‘happy’ he was honest about his desires.
‘She had a really positive response.’
Penn returned with a ‘phenomenal decrease,’ explaining that he was grateful that his request was taken so seriously.
