‘My late mum was looking down on me during Dancing On Ice,’ says Joey Essex

Dancing On Ice finalist, Joey Essex,  felt the presence of his late mother as he paid tribute to her on the programme.

At last weekend’s semi-final, the ex-Towie singer delivered a moving tribute to his mother Tina. He was eight years old when she committed suicide in 2001.

In an interview with Guilty Pleasures, the 32-year-old revealed that his mother was ‘certainly gazing down on me’ when he skated.

‘To be honest, it was incredibly tough to do that since I had this pouring of emotions beforehand,’ Joey revealed.

‘When I was invited to do a personal skate, my first thought was of my mother. Yet it’s still incredibly painful and raw.

‘I don’t think I’ll ever totally recover from that circumstance.’ Joey was unaware that his nan, who was in the crowd, was holding a piece of Tina’s clothes.

‘When I was young, my mother gave me a silk scarf… ‘I informed my grandmother about it,’ he continued. ‘She brought the scarf, which she kept in her pocket.

‘I do experience “feelings” from time to time. I’m not very superstitious, but I feel my mother is watching over me. I believe she would be pleased. She wished she could have been there.’

The former I’m A Celebrity contestant also discussed the possibility of creating a TV show based on his bereavement experience. ‘I’d love to do something with young adults who have experienced grief,’ he says.

More pressingly, Joey and his partner (and alleged love interest) Vanessa Bauer are preparing for the grand finale of Dancing On Ice, which will air on ITV1 on Sunday at 6.30pm.

And one of their dances sounds really toga-rific. ‘I’m Hercules, therefore I can’t wait… Hercules is little larger than me, but if I go to the gym today and tomorrow, I might be able to equal him!’ Joey yelled loudly.
