Munya Chawawa takes aim at out of touch government officials in new sketch about free school meals

Munya Chawawa’s latest video has taken aim at the government’s handling of free school meals after criticism around the food provided in meal hampers.

The comedian, 27, shared his usual brilliant take on the controversy, parodying out of touch government officials handling free school meals.

Playing an intern, he asks an official: ‘What is this?’ while pointing at a photo someone had shared of the food parcel they’d received, which was meant to be worth £30 but contained one loaf of sliced bread, a few cheese slices, a single can of baked beans, a handful of apples, carrots, bananas and potatoes, three Frubes, two Soreen bars and a tiny sachet of pasta.

The official replied: ‘Well, it’s a free school meal…’ to which the intern questions: ‘For who? Oliver Twist?!’

When the official mentions the fruit and veg in the parcel, the intern quips: ‘Sir, you’re feeding children not the cast of Peter Rabbit.’

It comes after photos of the food parcels parents in need had received instead of vouchers went viral, as people criticised the tiny portions, with some even receiving peppers that had been cut in half.

Following the criticism there has been a U-turn, with education secretary Gavin Williamson confirming in the House of Commons that the £15 voucher scheme will return next week.

The parcels had been distributed by school catering companies, but were labelled ‘woefully inadequate’ after many shared what they had received online.

Parents who are eligible for the scheme will now receive a £15 voucher which they can use in supermarkets to buy a week’s worth of food for their children instead.

Mr Williamson said: ‘As a dad myself, I thought, “How could a family in receipt of that really be expected to deliver five nutritious meals as is required?” It’s just not acceptable.’
