Miriam Margolyes, 82, has been featured on the cover of Vogue as part of the publication’s Pride issue.
Miriam was interviewed with Grammy nominee and actress Janelle Monáe, musician Rina Sawayama, The Last of Us’ Bella Ramsey, Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa, and House of the Dragon’s Emma D’Arcy as an LGBTQ+ pioneer and part of the community.
The July edition of British Vogue focuses on ‘Pride & Joy,’ and the veteran actress was photographed by Tim Walker in a sequence of lovely pictures.
Miriam is shown in a parody of a famous shot and scene from the 2003 film Calendar Girls, starring Dame Helen Mirren, Dame Julie Walters, and Celia Imrie, in which she poses topless behind a stack of iced buns.
The Harry Potter actress sported a necklace of pearls and pink lipstick, as well as matching nails and a bun in her hair.
Her cover photo has a stunning navy blue wrap around her shoulders and a black gauze fascinator over her eyes.
In other photographs, she’s dressed in a white tulle and organza dress with rollers in her hair and a very fashionable vintage houndstooth coat, seeming to be upset at her vanity as she’s busted in on.
In an interview with British Vogue, the Age of Innocence and Call the Midwives actor claimed she would not change her sexuality for the world.
‘I actually find lesbians a bit on the boring side, because they’re a bit heavy-handed about it all,’ she admitted.
‘I think gay people are very lucky, because we are not conventional, we are a group slightly apart. It gives us an edge. We’re good artists, we’re good musicians. And I like being gay. I wouldn’t want to be straight for anything.’
She also stated that she regretted coming out to her parents after her mother had her promise on the Torah that she would never have sex with another woman again, stating that “it hurt them and I don’t want to hurt anyone.”
Miriam, a working actor for decades, was exposed to a younger audience with her appearance as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films, however she admits that “it doesn’t mean as much to me as it does to them.”
‘For me Harry Potter wasn’t important. I was very glad I got the part and I enjoyed being in it and meeting all the people, but it’s not Charles Dickens,’ she stated, potentially shattering a few hearts with her typical directness.
Miriam was recently admitted to the hospital and shared an update on social media regarding her recuperation, which was delayed due to a chest illness.
Miriam praised her ‘dear friends’ who remembered her on her ‘TAVI DAY’ in a Facebook post, while uploading a photo of herself laying in bed in a medical gown. TAVI is an abbreviation for “transcatheter aortic valve implantation.”
She continued: ‘I did survive and am still in The Royal Brompton Hospital certainly till Sunday. I am growing energy but it’s still not quite me. I am putting this so you know how grateful I am for lovely messages.’
The actress assured that she would’slowly’ return to her numerous pursuits, including a book tour, before finishing her letter with ‘loving hugs.’
The July issue of British Vogue is available via digital download and on newsstands from Tuesday June 20.
