Miley Cyrus was overcome with emotion as she discussed her connection with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus.
The pop sensation, 30, rose to prominence as a youngster on the Disney sitcom Hannah Montana, which also starred her on-screen father, Billy Ray.
Miley has broken out and become a huge celebrity on her own merit since her childhood star days, with latest hit Flowers becoming the year’s bestselling single thus far.
Despite her musical success, Miley and her brothers experienced heartache when their parents, Billy and now-ex Tish, separated and filed for divorce.
Billy was engaged to musician Firerose, 34, barely four years his daughter’s age, whom he met on the set of Hannah Montana, just months after the divorce was filed.
At the time, their connection was alleged to have created friction between the father and daughter, with a source telling The Sun, ‘there has been some tension with Miley, which is painful to watch.’
Miley was seen crying as she talked about her father on the new ABC show Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions), which was presented to promote the release of her new track Used To Be Young.
In the clip, she compares her and her father’s childhoods, saying her dad ‘grew up the opposite of me.’
‘I grew up on a sound stage, in a house with a family that was super close and all lived under the same roof. And I grew up financially stable and emotionally stable, I think in my relationships also.
‘And that’s something that my dad didn’t have. I’ve seen how that affects a lot of people that go from having nothing to everything. It’s a really dangerous place.’
She admitted she believes ‘that’s where me and my dad’s relationship to fame and success is wildly different.’
‘Him feeling loved by a big audience impacted him emotionally more than it ever could me. When he feel special or important it’s like healing a childhood wound. And I’ve always been made to feel like a star.’
‘It makes me emotional,’ she admitted, before having to stop talking as her eyes filled with tears.
The video then showed Miley taking a big breath and wiping her tears before saying, ‘Oh, that got me.’
Following her parents’ divorce, it was claimed last year that Miley and her father were ‘no longer on speaking terms,’ with the singer even unfollowing Billy on Instagram.
‘Everyone is hoping that [Miley and Billy] will be able to get over it soon enough,’ a source claimed at the time. Fortunately, his other children do not dislike him.’
Trish, Miley’s mother, wedded to Prison Break actor Dominic Purcell over the weekend, but two of Tish’s children did not attend.
Noah, 23, instead shared updates on Instagram from her day out with Braisen as they spent time together away from the wedding in Malibu, California.
Miley, as well as Tish’s two adult children Brandi and Trace, were believed to have attended their mother’s wedding, with Miley allegedly serving as a bridesmaid.
Tish, like Billy, got engaged soon after her divorce, igniting romance speculations with Dominic three months later and announced her engagement not long after that.
