Meghan Trainor has given birth to a baby boy, who has been named Barry Bruce.

What might be an unusual name in the UK is definitely very sweet in the US, as the television star revealed the unusual nickname on social media yesterday.

Alongside an intimate post-birth picture of her and little Barry Bruce in hospital, the mum-of-two, 29, and her 31-year-old husband, Daryl Sabara, wrote: ‘On July 1st (our 7 year anniversary of our first date) we welcomed Barry Bruce Trainor into the world 🐻💙.

‘He was a big boy at 8lbs 7oz…and sideways (transverse), but we had an amazing, successful c-section, and I finally got my skin-to-skin time! Thank you to all of the incredible doctors and nurses who took such great care of u.’ [sic]

Celebrities flocked to send their well wishes to the happy family, which already includes two-year-old Riley.

‘Go Mama!! And welcome to the party, Barry!! What a lucky dude!!,’ wrote actor Mandy Moore.

But what does Barry Bruce mean, and are these two monikers increasing in popularity?

It’s amazing how many newborns are named Barry in the United States than in any other country.

According to Popular-BabyNames.com, from 1880 to 2019, there were 177,390 males called Barry in the United States, with 31 girls.

Meanwhile, from 1996 to 2019, just 417 infants – all males – were named Barry in the United Kingdom.

Even when the demographic differences between the UK and the US are considered, as well as the variability in historical periods, the popularity gap remains glaring.

Even though Barry is native to Ireland, its popularity there pales in comparison to that in the United States.

Barry is a gender neutral name that meaning ‘fair-haired,’ yet it has historically been far more common for males.

The same is true with the name Bruce.

According to the website, 1,055 infant boys were named Bruce in the United Kingdom from 1996 to 2019, while 381,622 boys and 51 girls were named Bruce in the United States from 1880 to 2019.

Bruce was formerly a surname with Scottish and French ancestors.

It originated in Scotland from Clan Bruce, and it is also considered to have originated in France, albeit where exactly is unknown.

It means ‘the willowlands’. Cute!

Of course, the most famous historical Bruce for us in the UK is Robert The Bruce, the legendary 14th-century Scottish warrior.

Meanwhile, sadly for little Barry Bruce, his first name may conjure up images of EastEnders and the great Barry Evans in the minds of British viewers.

Bruce has a little more star-studded lineup, with singer Bruce Springsteen and actor Bruce Willis representing it on the international stage.

Anyway, Barry Bruce, welcome to the world! Let’s simply see whether your name becomes famous in the UK and knocks Noah and Olivia off their pedestals.

We don’t see this occurring very soon, but maybe one day…
