LadBaby still leading race for 2020’s Christmas number one with just 48 hours to go

In just 48 hours, the Christmas number one for 2020 will be revealed and, currently, it’s looking like LadBaby is going to nab the top spot.

This year’s Christmas number one is set to be revealed on Christmas Day, with LadBaby facing tough competition from the likes of Mariah Carey, Liam Gallagher and Justin Bieber.

Hoping to secure their third consecutive Christmas number one with Don’t Stop Me Eatin’ (their sausage roll spoof on Journey’s iconic hit Don’t Stop Believin’), LadBaby are currently storming the charts.

LadBaby – made up of YouTubers Mark and Roxanne Hoyle – landed the coveted Christmas number one in 2018 with We Built This City (On Sausage Rolls) and in 2019 with I Love Sausage Rolls.

If they top the charts this year, LadBaby will equal the record of both the Spice Girls and The Beatles for having three consecutive Christmas number ones.

The girlband got the Christmas number one in 1996, 1997 and 1998, with 2 Become 1, Too Much and Goodbye respectively, while The Beatles were first to achieve three consecutive numbers ones with I Want To Hold Your Hand in 1963, I Feel Fine in 1964 and Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out in 1965.

LadBaby are this year’s mid-week leaders in the run-up to Christmas Day and are clearly still out in front, as they sit at number one with just two days to go, according to the Official Charts.

Mariah’s hit All I Want For Christmas Is You – that finally reached number one earlier this month 26 years after its release -close behind at number two and Wham! favourite Last Christmas sitting pretty at number three.

Jess Glynne is at number four with her rendition of Donny Hathaway’s festive hit This Christmas.

LadBaby have nabbed the Christmas number one for the last two years

A new protest song targeting Boris Johnson, following the new tier four lockdown restrictions being put in place ahead of Christmas, threatened to knock LadBaby off the top spot as it stormed the charts this week, following its release.

The track, titled Boris Johnson is a F*****g C**t was recorded by Essex-based band The K***s.

The lyrics of the entire one minute and 20 seconds long song are its expletive-filled title and while it won the support of Charlie Brooker and is currently the UK’s second most downloaded song, it’s fallen behind in the Christmas number one race – currently sitting at number six in the charts.

Over in the album charts, it’s looking likely Sir Paul McCartney will claim the Christmas number one album with his latest release McCartney III.

The Christmas number one charts will be revealed on BBC Radio 1 between 2-4ppm on Christmas Day.
