Kelly Clarkson has revealed how Garth Brooks hit track, The Dance, has been helping her cope amid her divorce from Brandon Blackstock.
The singer and her estranged husband revealed their separation in June, and Kelly admitted she’s had to learn how to be her own ‘hero’ following the split.
Speaking to country star Garth during an episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the 38-year-old explained: ‘So I’m going through a divorce and there’s been like a lot of books and people always give you stuff to help, especially when you have kids and stuff.
‘And there’s so much shame and guilt, and everybody sends you stuff, and I was just kind of working through it. I couldn’t quite nail down the feeling.’
The Miss Independent hitmaker continued: ‘Like you don’t want to crap on it, like, you don’t want to say that [relationship] doesn’t count or matter, but you don’t know what to put in it because it didn’t work out like you wanted. So, anyway, I kid you not, I was listening to my playlist and The Dance came on. And I was like, “No, that’s the thing. That’s it.”‘
Kelly was so moved by the song, she went on to write a track for her upcoming album based on the message.
She continued: ‘So, I literally, not like your song, like a rip-off, but I literally wrote this whole thing therapeutically for me, and it’s actually on my next album. The whole come-around, the little tag part is like, “Even though my heart is broken / It was worth the dance anyway.”
‘I think a lot of people that go through such a devastating [thing], there’s a lot of grief and a lot of loss and change, especially when you have kids. All of the books were helpful, but it’s so funny, I guess because I’m a musician, but I was listening to The Dance… [and] I got the point.’
The pair then discussed the lyrics of her 2015 ballad, Piece By Piece, which was about how Brandon had restored her faith in men after her father abandoned her when she was six.
However, Kelly views the song in a different way now as she explained: ‘I wrote the song for my daughter and my husband at the time, and little did I know it was only a piece of this puzzle. Like now I have this whole full puzzle sitting in front of me.
‘There’s a lyric on my new album. It’s, “by the way, piece by piece, I found out my hero is me”. Not in like a negative sense. It’s almost too much to put on someone to do that for you, you have to do that yourself.’
Kelly joked that she was a ‘little off’ with the original lyrics for Piece By Piece as she added: ‘I got there [in the end].’
The singer, 38, announced her split from husband of seven years Brandon, 43, in June, with the couple filing for divorce in LA.
Kelly and Brandon wed in 2013 in Tennessee and share two children together; daughter River, six, and son Remington, four.
