Kate Garraway reveals ‘heartbreaking missed moments’ with husband Derek Draper amid his coronavirus battle

Kate Garraway has opened up on the ‘heartbreaking’ moments her family has missed out on since her husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with coronavirus.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 53, has faced a difficult year amid the global pandemic, as her husband Derek, also 53, fell ill with Covid-19 in March.

He was in intensive care and placed into a medically induced coma, with Derek still remaining in hospital eight months later as his body now battles complications from the virus.

Kate has kept fans updated with his recovery and as she prepares to host GMB’s 1 Million Minutes Awards, that celebrate the efforts of people volunteering their time to help others, she touched on ‘missed moments’ her family were forced to go without this year.

‘There have been so many missed moments haven’t there? The first one was not having our chocolate Easter egg hunt that my mum organises every year,’ Kate explained.

‘All the kids go round and the grown-ups set clues. It’s been a huge tradition and that was the first event we missed that really hit home.’

The star, who shares two children with Derek; daughter Darcey, 14, and son William, 11, continued: ‘Then there was my birthday and then Billy’s birthday and Derek’s birthday… all those moments. Trying to make the most of them over Zoom and FaceTime.

‘My two god-daughters have both had babies and I have missed the first birthday, I have missed the christening, I just haven’t seen them because I haven’t been able to. I think I shall treasure all that when we start to get it back.’

‘So many people are missing out on such treasured moments, it really does break your heart thinking about it,’ Kate, who is set to face her first Christmas without Derek at home, added.

She also revealed how ‘grateful’ she is for her GMB co-star Ben Shephard’s support while Derek has been in hospital.

‘It has been a huge pressure on him,’ Kate said. ‘Working alongside somebody that you care for and you are worried about, plus trying to do the job, it’s a huge thing and I am very grateful that he has been there and I am aware of how tough it’s been for him. He has been amazing.’

Ben, meanwhile, revealed that he is always thinking about how he can help Kate and spoke of his admiration for his co-star.

‘Kate is so brilliant and professional and we have fun so you sometimes forget the relentless journey that [her family] are on at the moment,’ he said.

‘We all want to know what the outcome is going to be and that is the hardest thing, not knowing. It is so, so difficult and her eternal optimism and positivity is something that we can all look at. It is something that I use to inspire me as well.’

Good Morning Britain’s 1 Million Minutes Awards will take place virtually on December 17.
