Will Arnett and Justin Theroux have fallen into the football banter we didn’t realise we needed out of Hollywood after England’s crushing defeat in the Euro 2020 final.
The Three Lions fell at the final hurdle at Wembley on Sunday night, first drawing level 1-1 after extra time but after a tense penalty shoot-out, Italy emerged victorious, crushing the hopes of millions of fans who were banking on it finally coming home.
Sadly, it was heartbreak all round as the England men’s team’s 55-year wait for a major trophy continues with chants of It’s Coming Home to still reverberate around the country a little longer yet.
It seems Tropic Thunder star Justin knew this was the way things were going as he reacted to Will’s hopeful post ahead of the game.
The Arrested Development star shared a photo of three lions, alongside the England flag, as he showed his support for Gareth Southgate’s men.
It was a worthy post, a hopeful post, a post we were seeing a lot of as the stars came out to back captain Harry Kane and his team. Famous mate and Justin’s ex Jennifer Aniston went so far as to like Will’s post, showing how the magic of the Euros final made its way around the world.
Seemingly believing Italy was going to take the crown, Justin trolled: ‘In 90 minutes this will age poorly.’
Oh, the sting is real, but doubling down on his comment, Justin – whose father is of French-Canadian and Italian descent – added: ‘Will… i want to apologize for posting that in your comments. I was wrong and I’d like to set the record straight… It aged poorly in 130 minutes. (sic)’
As fans of the actor and writer joked he had ‘jinxed’ the England team into losing, Will was keeping an eye on his comments
He artfully clapped back to Justin, writing alongside a clown emoji: ‘Apology not accepted. For the record, I didn’t say they’d win.
‘Classic you… all over the map.’
Justin was perhaps feeling the heat of his support for Italy as he shared a clip of a downtrodden Luigi from Mario, backed by The Smiths, which we all know is the most melancholy choice for any backing track.
He wrote: ‘My waiting for DMs from all my English friends like.’
Still, Will was not alone in his support of England – even if he did try to cover his tracks – as stars including Adele led the support in cheering up the team.
Celebrities had been backing the team all day and reacted to the loss with messages of support on social media, particularly to Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho who all missed their penalties on the night.
Singer Adele posted in a red England shirt on Instagram to send some encouraging words to Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish and co.
‘You did us so proud! You brought our game home and brought us all together,’ she wrote in the picture caption.’
Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher also had a supportive message which he shared on Twitter, writing: ‘Gutted about the footy but gotta BIG UP the lads and Gareth Southgate and the fans that was something else we go again on the World Cup peace n love and most of all RESPECT.’
Meanwhile, Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway posted a picture of son Billy on Instagram looking as devastated as the rest of the country, but thanked the England squad for bringing ‘a moment of joy’.
She said: ‘God it’s heartbreaking isn’t it – but thank you #englandteam for getting us close enough to feel a united moment of joy – and for giving a whole new generation a chance to believe.’
That they did.
