After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, Jonnie Irwin is making the most of his life.
The 49-year-old anchor disclosed in November that his malignancy had migrated from his lung to his brain, and doctors told him he wouldn’t live until 2023.
He was diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2020 and is thought to be nearing the end of his life.
Since informing fans of the tragic news, the Place In The Sun host has been uploading treasured recollections of time spent with his children, Rex, four, and twins Rafa and Cormac, two, whom he shares with wife Jessica Holmes.
‘Front seat on the Metro riding with uncle @stuart.j.kane’, he captioned the latest picture of him and his two boys on a train looking super excited and happy to be on an outing.
Jonnie added his latest health update in the comments section of the picture, as he said: ‘Felling ok is the new feeling great! Make the most! X.’ [sic]
Fans liked his optimism during what had to be a very tough, yet valuable, period.
One follower had an especially moving post, since they, too, are battling cancer.
‘Just phenomenal,’ they began. ‘I have sarcoma cancer, just after third operation in three months and I definitely do not have the energy you have. Your just inspirational and what an amazing dad.
‘It has changed me for the better (very strange thing to say) I know that each day is what’s precious, not tomorrow but the “now”.
‘I was playing with my son yesterday and loved every second, out with coffee with my Dad today, just loved the feeling of fresh air on my face and the normality of feeling ok to experience these happy moments.’
Sending the message before finishing the note, the fan added in the comments below: ‘I meant to say was that I find you incredible, your message, your voice about palliative care, your honesty and I’m so sorry your going through this horrendous disease but you are so brave and your family must be so so proud.’
Indeed, if Jonnie’s recent Father’s Day is any indication, his family is quite proud of him.
His family lavished him with gifts, including handcrafted cards, a Toblerone (classic), and a breakfast of chocolate Guinness cake.
Jonnie grinned for the camera while holding a large ‘Dad’ cup and a large piece of cake.
On a recent edition of BBC One’s Morning Live, the singer was asked what advise he would give others in his situation and responded, ‘First and foremost, accept it,’ before discussing his experience getting palliative care.
‘I implore people to check out the hospice – if you’ve got the choice of using it, then use it,’ he stated.
Dr. Ranj Singh, a former Strictly Come Dancing contender, was also on Morning Live, stating that he feels “we need to rethink how people think” about palliative care.
‘You have a right to a choice of a hospice if you so wish, I would encourage people to at least explore that option,’ Jonnie added.
