Joe Swash has been reflecting on the first time he met Stacey Solomon – his future fiancée and mother of his youngest children – and it’s not as romantic as you might expect.
The actor, 39, and Stacey, 32, met for the very first time on the set of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! moments after she was crowned the winner of the 2010 series.
Recently, Stacey showed two of her older sons the moment of their first, brief meeting, where 2008 winner Joe gave the new Queen of the Jungle a congratulatory hug, and it was just about the cutest thing ever.
Joe however, remembers it slightly differently.
In an interview with Metro.co.uk, the dad-of-five called out to Stacey over the phone and asked: ‘Do you remember when you came out of the jungle and I said hello to you?’
He then said: ‘Did you know that she smelled worse than any other camp mate that came out of the jungle?
‘Oh my God. Honestly! I remember meeting her and I distinctly remember the smell!’
Laughing, Joe said it was ‘so cute’ when the children saw the video of their first meeting.
‘It was nice for them to see that, we’ve got a long history, we go back so far,’ he said.
‘Me and Stacey, we love I’m A Celebrity, we’ve got a great affinity with the show. We both went on it, we both won it. We both worked on it. We both met each other on it!
‘And when we look at our kids, it’s all because of the jungle, really.’
When asked if he would ever consider returning for another series of the show and competing in Wales, the popular presenter admitted he would ‘never say never’ but he would ‘cross that bridge when he comes to it’.
For now, the Solomon-Swash family are focusing on preparing for Christmas – the first in their new house, and the first with baby Rose, who was born in October, with Joe saying it will be ‘really special’.
‘Christmas is only good when you’ve got the kids,’ he said. ‘We’ve got five so we really enjoy our Christmas. We love it, it’s as exciting for me and Stacey as it is for them!’
While new research from Studio.co.uk reveals that the UK is a nation of Christmas present procrastinators, with almost two thirds of Brits (62%) admitting to leaving their Christmas purchases to the last minute, Joe is feeling fairly on top of things despite having five children and a fiancée to spoil.
‘I have done quite well this year, I have a few little things to pick up next week but I’ve done most of it, I’m pretty happy with myself!’ he admitted.
‘Usually I’m lastminute.com. But this year I’m doing slightly better.’
Speaking of Christmas presents, Joe has been reflecting on his own gifts he received down through the years, and one childhood toy in particular stands out: he got a G.I. Joe when he was 11, but couldn’t quite make it until the big day before giving into temptation.
‘I managed to get it out of the box without breaking anything and played with it in secret about four days before Christmas, it was amazing,’ he recalled.
‘My mum only found out a couple of years ago when I told her!’
Years later – perhaps in retaliation for 11-year-old Joe breaking the rules and playing with his gifts before Christmas – his mum bought him 15 pairs of trouser braces as a gift.
‘Literally, she got me about 15 pairs of braces!’ Joe laughed.
‘I thought “What the hell? Why have I got all these braces?!” I didn’t wear them – I think I had worn braces about twice in my life!’
The Solomon-Swash family go all-out for Christmas, and this year is no different, with Stacey regularly updating her Instagram followers as they put up decorations, hang lights on the tree and relax by the fire.
Joe, Stacey, and four of the kids including nine-week-old Rose, earlier this month posed for a gorgeous festive family photo outside the front door of their new home, which they have dubbed Pickle Cottage.
