James Corden has had his say on the rumoured ‘butthole cut’ of the movie Cats – but he doesn’t think even that could have saved the film.
Legend – and Twitter rumour – has it that a version of the film, which was panned by audiences, exists where the characters have visible ‘buttholes’, before they were apparently edited out of the final cut.
James, 42, played Bustopher Jones in the 2019 movie, but admits he’s never seen the supposed ‘butthole cut’ himself.
Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host asked James whether the cut exists, to which James responded: ‘I don’t know, I haven’t seen it. I’ve not watched the film.’
Stephen then asked whether James would prefer his character to be ‘anatomically correct’ so he has a butthole, to which James replied: ‘I think either way, it probably can’t save that movie!’
The host then joked that he disagrees, adding: ‘I would rent the butthole cut, just to count them!’
The rumours had first begun when a Twitter user had claimed a friend of theirs, who was a VFX producer, had been hired to remove the CGI buttholes from the cast of Cats.
The film had already undergone an edit after complaints about the visual effects in one of the earlier cuts, but did not end up a commercial success.
The Tom Hooper-directed musical , which also stars Idris Elba and Taylor Swift was slammed by critics with one claiming it was the ‘worst thing to happen to cats since dogs’.
James is not the only cast-member who says they haven’t watched the movie back despite starring in it, as Dame Judi Dench has also not seen it.
Speaking to Radio 4’s Front Row, Dame Judi said in March: ‘I didn’t read anything about the response to it, nor have I seen it. I’ve only seen a picture of myself [from the film].’
