We know Idris Elba has access to the greatest food in town (we chatted with his personal chef), but there’s no excuse for his not knowing what a Colin the Caterpillar cake is.
When Idris works away from home on film sets, he usually travels with his personal cook, King The Chef, who prepares the freshest and most delectable vegan meals.
Idris, 50, no doubt enjoys the finest sweets in town these days, but nothing beats a good old-fashioned Colin the Caterpillar, which most of us average persons have eaten at some point in our everyday lives.
Many of us recall the absolute thrill of receiving a chocolaty Colin the Caterpillar cake for our pre-teen birthdays, but Idris has admitted to having never heard of the renowned Marks & Spencer confection.
This week, the British actor appeared on Dev Griffin’s Heart nightly programme and was put in the hot seat to answer a series of odd, searing questions.
‘Idris Elba, have you ever had a Colin the Caterpillar cake at your own birthday party?’ Dev asked, to which his guest responded: ‘No.’
After a delay and looking puzzled, Idris asked: ‘Can I ask you a question. Who is Colin the Caterpillar? Is that bad?’
Dev couldn’t believe his ears and yelled: ‘Producer Zoe, could you Google Colin the Caterpillar please?’
Idris cheekily fired back: ‘If you have to Google him then I don’t know who he is.’
Dev proceeded to inform Idris of the news event he may have missed, explaining: ‘There’s a huge lawsuit going on at the moment. There’s also a Cuthbert the Caterpillar. There’s a whole scandal going on at the minute.’
‘How did I miss the lawsuit?’ Idris replied feigning shock.
The presenter said: ‘I’ll explain it to you afterwards, I feel like you could pull some strings and make this into a Hollywood blockbuster. It’s the story that deserves to be told.’
After being shown a photo of a Colin cake, Idris laughed and wondered: ‘Looks lovely actually, did you bring one?’ before explaining that he was fasting at the moment and was getting ready to eat, joking that he was so hungry he ‘nearly ate the phone’.
M&S has been embroiled in a legal battle with Aldi in previous years, alleging the supermarket’s Cuthbert the Caterpillar was “too similar to Colin.”
However, the disagreement was resolved in 2022 when both shops stated an agreement had been reached, however no specifics of the ‘secret’ arrangement were published.
Get Idris a piece for the love of all that is wonderful!
