Huw Edwards expressed his thoughts on the latest BBC redundancy letters in a tweet uploaded to his social media networks.
The newsreader was one of a few celebrities who received letters offering them early retirement in an effort to save costs.
They urged TV and radio hosts, including Reeta Chakrabarti, Sophie Raworth, and Clive Myrie, to consider considering voluntary redundancy.
Huw, on the other hand, appeared to set the record straight in a statement posted on Sunday.
Alongside a picture of the broadcaster and his mother drinking champagne, he wrote: ‘Reality check. A standard HR exercise by @BBCNews (one of many over the years) is just that.
‘A standard invitation to consider applying for voluntary redundancy. Nothing more. As my mam says, don’t believe everything in the papers [sic]’.
According to reports, the BBC is on a mission to restructure its news department in order to reduce budgetary outlays wherever feasible.
Philippa Busby, the BBC’s managing editor of news and current affairs, published a letter referencing developments previously mentioned by the national broadcaster.
According to MailOnline, the managing editor penned: ‘As you will be aware, in 2022 we announced a number of changes across BBC News which have meant that some colleagues have been placed at risk of redundancy, including some colleagues in presenter roles.’
Following this, an unidentified newsroom source mentioned to the publication: ‘The email is addressed to all senior news presenters and presenters on the band immediately below. Everyone got it on the same day.’
A BBC correspondent who did not want to be identified said the notes were ‘depressing’ and contributed to a “general atmosphere of chaos.”
A BBC spokesperson said: ‘This isn’t about any new job cuts – it’s a standard HR exercise relating to savings we’ve announced previously – and it’s not targeting any individuals; we have to send it to everyone who’s at the same grade.
‘We’re looking for expressions of interest in redundancy, not offering it, and it’s not the case that any or everyone who came forward would be accepted.’
