Gigi Hadid is reportedly ‘meeting with lawyers to discuss custody issues’ following her split from former One Direction star Zayn Malik.
The former couple reportedly called it quits in the wake of claims that the Pillow Talk singer shoved the model’s mother Yolanda Hadid, 57, during an altercation at the home he shares with the model.
It came after the star pleaded no contest to four criminal offenses of harassment after being accused of ‘striking’ 57-year-old reality star – which the 28-year-old has ‘adamantly denied’.
Multiple sources have claimed that Gigi, 26, is eager for a future in which Zayn remains involved in the life of their one-year-old daughter Khai.
‘Gigi met with her lawyers last week. She also met with new lawyers to start helping with custody issues,’ a source tells Us Weekly. ‘There will be conversations about custody.’
The source adds that Zayn ‘will always be a part of her life’ but that she finds the alleged altercation between him and her mother Yolanda ‘distressing’.
‘Yolanda is very upset with Zayn, but Gigi has made it clear that her daughter needs her dad,’ a source told People. ‘Gigi will do everything she can to make sure they co-parent in a civil way.’
The insider added: ‘Yolanda is, of course, very protective of Gigi. She wants the best for her daughter and grandchild. She has had some issues with Zayn.
‘He has a complicated personality, and she thinks he could treat Gigi better. It’s been hard at times for Gigi to live with him.’
The shocking claims against Zayn surfaced last week when he was accused of ‘striking’ Yolanda.
According to court documents, Zayn was at his Pennsylvania home on September 29 when he got into a huge argument with Yolanda.
Zayn has also been charged with one count of harassing Gigi, as he is said to have screamed at her to ‘strap on some f****** balls and defend your partner against your f****** mother in my house’, during a phone call.
Following speculation about the altercation, Zayn issued a statement on Thursday, in which he said he had decided to ‘not contest’ the claims in order to keep his life as private as possible.
He wrote on Twitter: ‘As you all know I am a private person and I very much want to create a safe and private place for my daughter to grow up in. A place where private family matters aren’t thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart.
‘In an effort to protect that space for her, I agreed to not contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of my partner’s who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago.’
Zayn went on to say the situation ‘should be a private matter’, and he’s determined to bring the family back to a ‘peaceful environment’ away from the public eye.
He added: ‘This was and still should be a private matter but it seems for now there is divisiveness and despite my efforts to restore us to a peaceful family environment that will allow for me to co-parent my daughter in a manner in which she deserves, this has been ‘leaked’ to the press.
‘I am hopeful though for healing for all involved with the harsh words shared and more importantly, I remain vigilant to protect Khai and give her the privacy she deserves.’
In a statement released to TMZ, Zayn addressed Yolanda’s allegations and said: ‘I adamantly deny striking Yolanda Hadid and for the sake of my daughter I decline to give any further details and I hope that Yolanda will reconsider her false allegations and move towards healing these family issues in private.’
Sources later revealed that Zayn and Gigi ended their relationship a month ago but are focused on co-parenting their 13-month-old daughter Khai.
When approached about the split and Yolanda’s allegations, Gigi’s rep added: ‘Gigi is solely focused on the best for Khai. She asks for privacy during this time.’
