The next character to become Batman in the comic books will be Black, DC Comics have confirmed.
The new series, which will be set in a future Gotham City, will be written by John Ridley, the screenwriter behind 12 Years A Slave.
The son of Bruce Wayne’s business manager Lucious Fox will become the Batman of the future following the Caped Crusader’s death, in a future Gotham City where superheroes are outlawed.
Tim Fox will take over the task of protecting Gotham City against the evil Magistrate who has taken over.
Oscar-winner John is most excited for his sons to read the comics, with a Black superhero taking over as Batman.
He explained to the New York Times: ‘ They appreciate the things that I do. They’re happy for me.
‘They’re great supporters. But they would much rather see Black Panther than 12 Years A Slave, let’s be honest.
‘So to be able to write the next Batman, for them to know that this next Batman is going to be black, everybody else on the planet can hate it, have a problem with it, denigrate it, but I have my audience and they already love it.’
The new incarnation of Batman will be introduced as part of DC Comics’ Future State event, with the four-issue series Future State: The Next Batman being published in January.
In 2009, DC Comics also introduced an alternate-universe Black Superman called Calvin Ellis, who was also President of the USA in his reality, with co-creator and writer Grant Morrison confirming the character was inspired by Barack Obama.
