Dane Baptiste has shared his thoughts on celebrating the holiday season amid the coronavirus pandemic, and why celebs who continue to flout the rules should be sent to an island by themselves.
The comedian, who is the face of Vistaprint’s new Christmas campaign, will be spending Christmas Day with the family in his support bubble, and reaching out to the others via video calls instead of face-to-face.
He told Metro.co.uk: ‘The main thing for me is to be together and eat well and drink well and take advantage of the technology to make sure that I connect with my family, because this year has definitely taught us to value our loved ones a lot more because you never know when you’ll be able to see them or just have the basic minimum of contact.’
While this Christmas will be quite different for most, certain stars, including Laurence Fox, have boasted about not following the lockdown rules designed to protect the elderly and vulnerable from coronavirus.
Dane adds: ‘I think it’s very revelatory about the level of privilege that some of us have enjoyed for so many years.
‘If you think about it less as masks, but more about the Emperor’s New Clothes, and you’re seeing a bunch of very, very mediocre and very basic contingent of b***hes, who have never had their privilege challenged before beginning to lose, as the rest of the world realises that they’re not wearing any clothes, which is very typical of Laurence Fox.
‘I think people like that are just very indicative of major problems in our society where some people think there’s a rule for them and a rule for others. However you feel about the virus, the main thing that we don’t want to do is to overwork or to compromise our healthcare system or healthcare infrastructure.
‘So I think if you are somebody who wants to flout these regulations and suggestions from medical professionals, then you should make it very clear you had no interest in following these rules so when you do arrive [at hospital] our key workers don’t have to help you.
‘It’s not just about ourselves but about keeping other people safe. I think if people choose not to prioritise the safety of others around them, then maybe we should put them on an island – maybe Epstein Island – by themselves and then see how that goes.’
Dane also revealed that you’re much more likely to hear Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone and Leona Lewis’ One More Sleep playing in Casa Baptiste over Christmas than the vocal stylings of Michael Buble.
He joked: ‘These croony kind of warbling covers of songs don’t need to be done. Everyone knows when you hear All I Want For Christmas, that’s for everybody to go crazy.
‘That’s like a karaoke classic and then he made it into like an opioid-infused version, where you’re falling asleep as you’re saying it and I’m not here for that.
‘I want to make it very clear, as a person Michael Buble is great. Especially in terms of him prioritising his family over his music, I can’t do anything but respect that.
‘But his music for me is like when your uncle wears one of those reindeer things on his d**k, and he comes over like “Hey everyone!” and it’s like “ughhhh come on, we shouldn’t be drawing attention to your d**k!”. I don’t care what time of year it is.
‘That’s how I feel, like someone’s putting a big old reindeer d**k in my face as Michael Buble’s playing in every single Uber I get, for the remainder of the year.’
