Dame Deborah James is on a mission to work her way through all the cocktails while she can, as she continues to receive end-of-life care amid her battle with bowel cancer.
The 40-year-old campaigner was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016 but in May revealed there was nothing else doctors could do for her and she would be moved to hospice care.
After last week revealing she was surprised to still be here, Dame Deborah – who has raised more than £6million for cancer research with her Bowelbabe charity – is making the most of the time she has left, sharing her ‘sundowner treat of choice’.
In a photo uploaded to her Instagram on Tuesday, the journalist and campaigner had quite the tipple prepared which looked perfect for the warmer weather.
She wrote: ‘Yes that is Archers! And yes I did grow up as archers and lemonade being a stable college drink.
‘Today’s ‘sundowner’ treat of choice! Sex on the beach!
‘Maybe I should just call this working my way through all old school cocktails day-by-day before I’m gone.’
Last month Dame Deborah revealed she was receiving end-of-life care and explained that it was a post she ‘never wanted to write’, as the focus was now on making her comfortable.
‘We have tried everything, but my body simply isn’t playing ball,’ she began. ‘My active care has stopped and I am now moved to hospice at home care, with my incredible family all around me and the focus is on making sure I’m not in pain and spending time with them.
‘Nobody knows how long I’ve got left but I’m not able to walk, I’m sleeping most of the days, and most things I took for granted are pipe dreams. I know we have left no stone unturned. But even with all the innovative cancer drugs in the world or some magic new breakthrough, my body just can’t continue anymore.’
Last week she shared an update on how she was doing, joking she was ‘surprised’ to have outlived, again, what doctors had given her.
Saying she is ‘stable’ and ‘taking life slowly’, Dame Deborah added on Lorraine: ‘I’m taking life day by day and just continuing to feel blessed to have another day knowing that my time is limited,’ she told Lorraine in a pre-recorded video that aired on Thursday’s episode.
‘At the same time, if truth be told, I’ve already outlived, yet again, what I was told when I was sent home from the hospital.’
‘Even I’m a bit surprised,’ she added. ‘But I think it’s having that sense of purpose, getting involved, continuing with the campaigning which is keeping me going.’

You, Me & The Big C podcast host Dame Deborah James has admirably raised money towards cancer charities after announcing that her own bowel cancer was now terminal.
She is now receiving end-of-life hospice care at home due to her cancer treatment being stopped last month.
With the support of Cancer Research UK (CRUK), Dame Deborah and her family established the Bowelbabe Fund, with all money raised to be allocated to funding clinical trials and research into personalised medicine that could result in new treatments for cancer patients, including projects in collaboration with partners such as The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and The Royal Marsden. Donations will also go towards continued support to raise awareness of cancer, such as Bowel Cancer UK’s Never Too Young campaign.
At the start of June, the fund had so far raised £6.6million to go towards clinical trials and research into personalised medicine for cancer patients and supporting campaigns to raise awareness of bowel cancer.
