Frustration at Matt Hancock’s stint in the I’m A Celebrity jungle was sky-high yesterday as families who have lost loved ones in the pandemic flew a banner over the camp.
The plane’s stark message read: ‘Covid bereaved say get out of here!’
It was sent up by campaigners 38 Degrees, working with Covid-19 Bereaved Families For Justice, after 44,000 people signed a petition to have the MP axed from the show.
Lobby Akinnola, who lost his father to the virus, said: ‘Matt Hancock isn’t a “celebrity”, he’s the former health secretary who oversaw the UK having one of the highest death tolls in the world from Covid-19 whilst breaking his own lockdown rules.’
Mr Hancock, 44, is earning a reported £400,000 from his ITV deal, and has a book, Pandemic Diaries, out soon.
38 Degrees CEO Matthew McGregor said he ‘should be giving Covid-bereaved families the answers they deserve, rather than playing games for dingo dollars, plastic stars and a £400,000 pay cheque’.
In last night’s episode Mr Hancock shared his thoughts on how Liz Truss trumped Rishi Sunak to succeed Boris Johnson as PM: ‘It was about people seeing Rishi as wielding the knife against Boris… they definitely put the disloyalty to Boris as a negative.’
He also said that when Mr Johnson flew in to potentially rejoin the leadership race, ‘I texted him and I said, “You know I think you’re wonderful, but it’s not your time.” ’
