Carol Vorderman reminded fans of a hilarious moment from Countdown two decades ago, when host Richard Whiteley’s tie accidentally spelt out a very X-rated word.
She shared a photo of a news article, in which Richard was pictured wearing a tie which had the word ‘Countdown’ written on it, however only the ‘Count’ part was visible… and his lapel mic obscured the ‘O’.
Laughing about the mishap, which appeared to spell c**t, Carol wrote: ‘#2OYEARSAGOTODAY #FRONTPAGE this has popped up on memories..omg it was front page a long time ago.
‘Richard asked me which tie to wear for our Christmas Countdown special show. I chose this one cos it was handpainted by a lovely viewer. Xmas trees and COUNTDOWN written all the way down it.
‘He put it on… we recorded the show and then it was broadcast on Channel 4 at Christmas OMG OMG OMG.
‘We were so innocent we hadn’t noticed that when Whiters sat down behind the desk, the DOWN of COUNTDOWN had disappeared and then he’d clipped his mic over the O….leaving just C**NT**** left to be seen.
‘OMG what a front page to wake up to nearly 20 years ago today. We cried laughing #soinnocent’.
The memory left Carol’s followers in hysterics, with many reminiscing on her and Richard – who died in 2005 – on the show.
They wrote: ‘Ha, couldn’t make it up’, ‘LOVE this! Loved Richard, he was great and is still sadly missed! Merry Christmas Carol, you’re great too’ and ‘You were both legends on there, such fun’.
Others added: ‘ahh Richard, a lovely man and good banter from the pair of you. Loved countdown’ and ‘Trust that to happen to him’.
Richard had hosted Countdown from 1982 until 2005, with Carol also on the show from 1982 until 2008.
