Caitlyn Jenner releases first governor campaign video amid anti-trans backlash: ‘I’ve always been a dreamer’

Caitlyn Jenner has taken aim at ‘career politicians’ in her first campaign video for governor of California amid ongoing backlash over her stance opposing trans girls competing in girls’ sports teams.

The Olympic gold medial-winner and reality TV star, who announced her plans to run for office last month, promised to take on incumbent Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, as he faces a recall election following a Republican-led backlash against his handling of the pandemic.

The three-minute video featured footage of Newsom and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who were both criticized for their visits amid lockdown restrictions.

Narrating over the images, the 71-year-old stated: ‘I’ve always been a dreamer. California was once the envy of the world. We had what everyone else wanted. The American dream grew up here.

‘Yet career politicians and their policies have destroyed that dream. It’s been locked away, closed, shuttered, left in the dark, burned down.’

The trans star continued: ‘The government is now involved in every part of our lives. They have taken our money, our jobs and our freedom. California needs a disruptor, a compassionate disruptor.

‘I came here with a dream 48 years ago, to be the greatest athlete in the world. Now, I enter a different kind of race. Arguably, my most important one yet, to save California.’

Her campaign clip also included footage of Jenner winning gold for the USA at the 1976 Olympics.

Plus clips of her at the 2015 Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards, days after announcing she was transitioning to become a woman.

Jenner supported Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, but later criticised his administration for some actions against transgender people.

However, she worked with his former campaign manager Brad Pascale as it was revealed he produced her new video.

Once labeled the ‘world’s greatest athlete’ thanks to her Olympic exploits, Jenner came out as a transgender woman in April 2015.

The video release came after charities condemned Caitlyn’s controversial stance of opposing trans girls competing in girls’ sports teams.

The former Olympian declared athletes who are born male shouldn’t be able to compete in girls’ sports competitions and later doubled down on her opinions on social media despite backlash.
