It’s amazing what people believe they can deduce from something as basic as hair colour.
Brunettes are said to be intelligent, whilst blondes are fun and stupid, and gingers have fiery tempers.
While these may appear to some to be tired cliches, one TikTok user who has had all of the hair colours can attest that you’re treated differently based on your ‘do— and red hair allegedly attracts more male attention than the others.
Taking to TikTok, user @peralixs said she was ‘treated the best’ with long brunette hair and the worst ‘short unnatural hair’, she says that red hair was the most likely to get her hit on.
While this is great if you’re actively trying to pull, it’s not so good if you’re attempting to mind your business and go about your day.
She isn’t alone – people in the comments were shocked to find out it wasn’t just them who experienced a higher number of people flirting with them when they dyed their hair red.
‘The red hair effect. Good to know its confirmed by others..’ wrote one person.
One woman said she ‘pulled so much’ when she had red hair — but when she went blonde, the attention abruptly stopped.
Another said: ‘Idk why but red hair turns them feral it was crazy when I had it’.
‘Men used to foam at the mouth at my red hair,’ another quipped.
Someone else who had tried numerous hair styles backed the original poster up, too: ‘From long blonde, to long red, then short unnatural, this is so true,’ she wrote.
While it might seem far-fetched, the Red Hair Effect may be an extension of TikTok’s red nail theory, which says that painting your nails red leads to more male attention — and the theory is actually backed up by science.
A study in 2008 revealed that ‘red leads men to view women as more attractive and more sexually desirable.’
Psychologists Andrew Elliot and Daniela Niesta, who wrote the study ‘Romantic Red: Red Enhances Men’s Attraction to Women,’ also noted that ‘men seem unaware of this red effect, and red does not influence women’s perceptions of the attractiveness of other women, nor men’s perceptions of women’s overall likeability, kindness, or intelligence.’
While this might explain why the red haired girlies get more male attention, it definitely doesn’t excuse it, and it goes without saying that red hair isn’t an invitation for unwanted sexual advances.
