The honey-brown highlight is the hair equivalent of a subtly sun-kissed spray tan in the dead of winter: an instant mood booster. If you’re a natural brunette, the golden-bronze lift says I just spent ten days in St. Barths — even if the only travelling you’ve done is the long trek to your office wrapped in a puffer jacket.
According to LA-based colourist Tabitha Dueñas, the ideal tone is a warm medium brown, not the lifted blonde you typically see with highlights. “Honey brown is not a bright, cool-toned blonde highlight,” she says. “It’s much warmer and looks best infused subtly via babylight foils or blended balayage focused through the ends, leaving the root tone natural to give sparkly dimension between the honey lift and dark-brown base shade.”
Ahead, the best examples of how the honey-brown colour reads on a range of hair textures — so you can get in on the seasonal pick-me-up.
One particularly great thing about honey-brown highlights is that they’re pretty low-maintenance when compared to a single-process colour. Dueñas says that the time between touch-ups can be up to two or three months, if need be.

Colourist Chad Kenyon shows how the lightest iteration of a honey-blonde tone, teetering on golden blonde, blends seamlessly over a darker brown base.
In this example from LA-based hair salon Mèche, the golden-brown lift around the face frame acts like a soft halo of natural light.
If you ask for your lightest honey-brown highlight on just the ends of your hair — like this dimensional colour on influencer Jordan Rebello — you’ll get the same illuminating effect while further extending the time you can afford to wait between appointments.
Colourist Gaby Bowen of NYC’s Cutler Salon shows how a warm bronze balayage on curls reads as shiny and healthy — think sun-kissed, not sun-bleached.
